A Strange Power

Princeton Sound Kitchen presents Gemma Peacocke’s A Strange Power.
Gemma Peacocke’s ‘A Strange Power’ is a 45-minute cantata about the tangled web of romance, free love, creation, and death in the early lives of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley and her step-sister, Claire Clairmont. Scored for two sopranos, clarinet, piano, percussion, and cello, the work will be performed by Sputter Box with guest vocalist Charlotte Mundy. The program also features new works for the performers by other Princeton University graduate student composers.

La Grande Bande presents Handel’s “Olinto pastore, Tebro fiume, Gloria, HWV 143”
Two of the most important cities in Handel’s lifetime were the English and Italian capitals of London and Rome: in Rome, Handel planted seeds for a successful career as an operatic composer; in London, his career blossomed to its fullest potential both at the English court and in the English
opera houses.
Set on the shores of the River Tiber, Handel’s cantata O come chiare e belle stars an ancient River Tiber coaxed by the shepherd Olinto and goddess Gloria, to reinvigorate itself in a new era. Handel’s famous Water Music Suites were composed in 1717 to accompany King George I on an evening journey on the River Thames from Whitehall to Chelsea.
Pre-concert talk begins at approximately 6:45pm.

Vocalists Alina Tamborini and Hannah Spierman join forces with pianist Max Lifchitz in an intimate recital marking the end of winter and beginning of spring.
The program highlights the great diversity of exciting styles evident in the works by living American composers. Featured will be vocal and instrumental music by Lonnie Hevia, Max Lifchitz, Jonathan McNair, John McGinn, and Joel Rosenbaum.

Teatro Nuovo presents an all-day celebration of the 100th birthday of Maria Callas at El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue), next door to the great soprano’s birthplace. Events take place throughout the day, culminating with a concert performed by Teatro Nuovo singers.
